The response to next month’s fifth JSA/Panmunjom Veterans Reunion in Chicago, Illinois has been outstanding. Vets quickly reserved all 50 rooms of the Hilton Garden Inn O’Hare Airport hotel’s reunion block. We were given 10 more rooms, and those also went quickly. The hotel has been most accommodating by continuing to take additional veterans’ room reservations for this reunion, and at last count there are 74 rooms now reserved. (A special thank you goes to hotel sales coordinator Laura Furmanek).

Veterans are coming by plane, train and automobile from all parts of the country – from Washington to Florida, from New York to California – 25 states now. There is a nice mixture of vets who have previously attended one or more reunions and a number of vets who will be attending their first JSA reunion. Vets serving in the unit from the 1950’s decade through the 1990’s decade are registered for this reunion. At last count, there are 76 JSA veterans registered for the reunion and/or reserved a reunion hotel room.

The deadline for this reunion is rapidly approaching. If you want to attend, and have not already contacted the Hilton Garden Inn O’Hare Airport to reserved a hotel room for this two day reunion, please do so immediately. If you have not completed the JSA veterans reunion registration form and mailed it to me (mailing address at bottom of this e-mail) with the appropriate payment, please do so immediately.

If you have not received the Chicago JSA/Panmunjom Veterans Reunion information packet, please contact me (contact information at end of this email), and I can either e-mail or US Postal Service mail this packet to you.

If you can not attend the Chicago reunion, but would like to order an official Chicago JSA reunion polo shirt or a reproduction JSA badge fob, please complete the merchandise order portion of the reunion registration form and mail it to me (mailing address at bottom of this e-mail) with the appropriate payment. THE DEADLINE TO ORDER REUNION SHIRTS IS APRIL 01ST. The order for reunion shirts will go to the manufacturer on April 02nd, and we hope to have the finished shirts back for mailing to vets by the middle of April. Vets attending the reunion will be able to pick their shirts up at the registration desk unless they have requested and paid for shipping of shirt(s) to their homes

Several vets are preparing photo presentations of the JSA camp, Panmunjom and the Neutral Nations Supervisor Commission camp – back in the day and now. One vet is working on a recreation of the 1970-71 time period VIP tour briefing given to all visitors before they entered the Korea DMZ and Panmunjom. Another vet – who is a veterans service officer, will given a presentation on how to navigate the Veterans Administration claim process. Our luncheon speaker – Professor John Batty-Slyvan, a 1966-67 Second Infantry Division veteran of the Korean DMZ; and our banquet dinner speaker – General Bert Mizusawa, the JSF commander for the 1984 Soviet defector/firefight at Panmunjom, are both confirmed.

Troy Kness of Kness Signs has designed another beautiful reunion banner for Chicago; and the previous reunions’ banners will also be on display for vets to admire. Raffle gifts have collected, and more trivia questions drafted. (For example: What Korean hero’s statute was located at the base of Panmunjom’s Freedom House pagoda? Answer found at end of this email). There will be tables available in the reunion meeting room for vets to bring their JSA/Panmunjom/ Korea DMZ memorabilia to display.

MORE ARMY SUPERIOR UNIT AWARD INFORMATION

General Bert Mizusawa responded to the last JSA vet e-mail regarding Army Superior Unit Awards (ASUA) for the United Nations Command Support Group – Joint Security Area unit, and provided information of another earlier ASUA award for the time period 18 September 1984 to 26 November 1984. He believes this was one of the first such newly created unit award to be issued by the US Army.
