The first talks between UN forces and the Korean People’s Army and the Chinese Volunteers began in the summer of 1951 in the village of Kaesong. UN forces were on the south side of the Imjin river at the time. Although helicopters could be and were used to shuttle between Munson-ni and Kaesong, ground forces still needed to get to Kaesong via ground transportation. Enter the 2998th ETBC (Engineer Treadway Bridge Company) and the Treadway Bridge.
